Sahanoda Foundation

The Founder of the Sahanoda Foundation is Mr. Bandula Weera-Wardana, a well known philanthropist and a ship owner. Founded in 1992 it has been incorporated as a Charitable Organization by Act of Parliament on 7th December 1999.

The Foundation provides physical and financial spiritual assistance and guidance for children and the elderly in Sri Lanka. Programmes are mainly focused on fighting malnutrition and deprivation, and drug rehabilitation. In addition now it includes foster care for six hundred and fifty Tsunami orphans. Homeless elderly people are helped by the provision of accommodation in the Elders’ Home along with meals, clothing, entertainment and spiritual services.

Registration

  • The Foundation is registered at the NGO Secretariat of Social Security Ministry as a voluntary Non-Governmental Organization under Act No. 31 of 1980, amended by Act No.8 of 1998.
  • Incorporated under Act No. 20 of 2000 Parliament of Sri Lanka
  • Is holder of a Certificate of Approval issued by the National Council for the Elders Rights (Act No.9 of 2000)
  • Registered as a specially authorized society under Section 3(b) of the Societies Ordinance and notified to the Registrar of Companies.
  • Declared as an approved charity organization under section 31(7) (a) of the Inland Revenue Act No.38 of 2000.

Specific Objectives

  • Improvement of health, nutritional and educational status as well as the moral standards of the community.

Main Projects and Activities

  • Child nutrition programme involving the community in preventing malnutrition.
  • Implementation of the anti-narcotic programs targeting youth and school children.
  • Donation of hospital beds, wheelchairs, crutches, hand-railings, spectacles. Eye lenses and hearing aid instruments to the needy.
  • Sahanoda relief services for elders.
  • Welfare activities for the people in boarder villages.
  • Implementation of water supply, drainage and sanitary services for the community.
  • Development of basic infrastructure facilities for the poverty stricken villages. (Renovation of highways. Construction of houses, schools and other constructions, renovation of reservoirs, anicut and canals etc.)
  • Spiritual development programs, counseling.
  • Provision of relief duty services to the people in Sri Lanka who are severely and adversely affected by natural disasters (drought/flood etc;)
  • .Implementation the educational scholarship program under the Foster Parent’s Scheme to the 650 children who lost parents by the Tsunami Disaster in Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota Districts.
